Alderman Ian Neilson – City of Cape Town
Ian holds a Master’s degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Cape Town. For 20 years he was involved in a wide range of Water and Municipal Engineering projects, across South Africa. Several of his projects received professional awards.
He has been a city councillor since 1996. He was Executive Councillor for Safety and Health from 2000 to 2002, when he established a Municipal Police Service for the City and rolled out an anti-retroviral program across the city.
He was appointed by the Mayor in 2006 as the Mayoral Committee member (City Minister) for Finance. He is also the chairperson of the city’s 2010 World Cup committee. Since January 2009 he has held the additional portfolio of Economic and Social Development and Tourism. He chairs the Mayoral Committee on behalf of the Mayor.
